Bergenia Bergenia 'Miss Piggy' earned the common name Pigsqueak due to the squeaky sounds the leaves make as they are rubbed together. This new genus for the Proven Winners perennial collection is appropriately named 'Miss Piggy'! In early spring, a stunning display of bright pink flowers top the thick, dark green, glossy leaves. Compared to 'Sakura', 'Miss Piggy' has more consistent pink flower color, a larger canopy of foliage, and broader, more substantial leaves. The perfect choice to jumpstart your garden after the snow melts.
Care
Bergenia thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers rich, moist, well-drained soil, though it adapts well to a variety of garden conditions once established. It is tolerant of both cold and heat, making it a reliable choice across many climates. Regular watering during dry periods will encourage lush growth, while mulching helps to conserve moisture and protect roots in exposed areas. After flowering, faded blooms can be trimmed to keep plants tidy, and older leaves may be cut back in spring to encourage fresh new growth.
Growth Habit
This perennial forms low, spreading clumps that typically reach 12 to 18 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide. Its bold, evergreen foliage provides texture and contrast in mixed plantings, while the tall flower stems create vertical interest when in bloom. Over time, clumps slowly expand, making it a dependable, low-maintenance ground cover or edging plant.
Toxicity
Bergenia is not generally considered toxic to humans or pets, making it a safe and family-friendly addition to ornamental beds. It is also resistant to browsing by deer and rabbits, further adding to its reliability in the landscape.
