History of the SS Carl D. Bradley: A Tragic Tale of Great Lakes Shipping

The SS Carl D. Bradley, a renowned Great Lakes freighter, played a vital role in transporting limestone between ports from 1927 to 1958. Regarded as one of the largest and fastest vessels of its kind, the ship met a tragic fate on November 18, 1958, when it sank during a severe storm on Lake Michigan, claiming the lives of 33 crew members.

The disaster had far-reaching consequences, prompting significant changes in the regulation of shipping practices on the Great Lakes. However, its most profound impact was felt in Rogers City, Michigan, a close-knit town with only 3,800 residents, where 23 of the Bradley's crew members hailed from.
