De azalea neemt in de bonsaiteelt een aparte plaats in. Ze heeft met nog een reeks andere voor bonsai gebruikte planten gemeen dat ze geen boom maar een struik is en bovendien dan nog één die hoofdzakelijk om zijn bloemen wordt geteeld. Wie in het voorjaar in de Alpen of Dolomieten verbleef heeft misschien wel al eens in het wild bloeiende Azalea’s gezien en dit is een echte belevenis. In Japan komt deze plant veel meer in het wild voor. We mogen niet vergeten dat Japan hoofdzakelijk een bergland is, tevens een eilandengroep met bovendien op héél wat plaatsen de ideale leefomstandigheden voor deze prachtige struik.
