Dit vierde deel in de populaire RPG-serie van Mario & Luigi begint als prinses Peach en haar personeel, met Mario en Luigi in hun kielzog, vertrekken naar het mysterieuze Sluimereiland - op uitnodiging van de al even mysterieuze eigenaar van het eiland, Dr Snoozemore. Maar na een warm welkom op het eiland – waarbij Dr Snoozemore gek genoeg ontbreekt – gebeurt er een ramp. Prinses Peach wordt ontvoerd naar dromenland door een nieuwe vijand in de serie, de spookachtige vleermuiskoning Antasma.

Om de schuilplaats van deze nieuwe vijand te vinden en prinses Peach te redden, moet Mario dromenland binnengaan via de dromen van de slapende Luigi, wiens hersensignalen op dezelfde golflengte blijken te zitten als die van de bewoners van Sluimereiland. Wisselend tussen Luigi’s droomwereld en de wakkere wereld, moeten Mario en Luigi puzzels oplossen, vijanden verslaan, en zelfs Luigi’s dromen manipuleren om te vorderen!

De relatie tussen dromenland en de wakkere wereld speelt in dit spel een belangrijke rol. Terwijl Mario en Luigi hun krachten bundelen voor hun legendarische duoacties als ze in de wakkere wereld Sluimereiland verkennen, kan Mario in dromenland de krachten van de Droom-Luigi juist goed kan gebruiken. Er zijn namelijk magische manieren waarop de speler de slapende Luigi op het touchscreen kan aanraken om dromenland te beïnvloeden. Voor deze zogenaamde luigillusies kan de speler op het onderste scherm van het systeem bijvoorbeeld aan Luigi’s snor trekken of aan zijn neus kriebelen, waardoor de omgeving in dromenland verandert. Het is vaak de kunst om dromenland zó te manipuleren dat Mario erin kan vorderen.

Tijdens gevechten in dromenland, komt de kracht van de Droom-Luigi opnieuw goed van pas. Mario kan bijvoorbeeld een heel leger Luigi’s gebruiken voor formidabele Luigio-aanvallen; acties die sterk verschillen van de duoaanvallen in de wakkere wereld en die de functies van de Nintendo 3DS of Nintendo 3DS XL op originele manieren benutten. Bij een bepaalde Luigio-aanval balanceert Mario bijvoorbeeld op een bal van Luigi’s en moet de speler met bewegingsbesturing de vijanden aan het eind van het parkoers raken. Het 3D-effect van het systeem helpt enorm bij het nauwkeurig aanvallen, terugslaan en ontwijken tijdens gevechten. Hoe beter de timing, hoe beter het resultaat!

Als een gevecht is gewonnen, worden de verdiende ervaringspunten gebruikt om de hartpunten, aanvalskracht en andere eigenschappen van de personages te versterken, zoals dat gebruikelijk is in klassieke RPG’s. Net als in eerdere delen van de Mario & Luigi-serie zijn er ook weer duopunten – vereist voor het uitvoeren van speciale aanvallen – en de eigenschap SNOR – waarmee de kans toeneemt dat Mario of Luigi tijdens een gevecht een extra harde klap uitdeelt. Ook weer terug is het badge-beloningssysteem, wat inhoudt dat de broers badges kunnen vinden, kopen en combineren om speciale beloningen te krijgen voor bijzondere prestaties – zoals het uitvoeren van perfecte aanvallen tijdens gevechten. Nieuwkomers in de serie worden geholpen door hints, een makkelijke spelstand en een trage aanvalsstand waarmee ze de gevechten gemakkelijk in de vingers kunnen krijgen.

This book wasn't bad, but wasn't my cup of tea. It's highly disappointing because the storyline is so original. There is no real conflict or resolution, so the entire thing feels flat. As a lover of omegaverse books, I know there is a ton of variety out there, and ov is really up to the author. But this one is weird. Omegas have multiple scent glands all over their bodies and go into week long heats every month. Alphas have knots in the middle of their shaft instead of the base, and the knot doesn't always swell, no explanation of when or why. It doesn't engage at all when the mouth is in play. I also didn't enjoy the author's writing style. Each paragraph is only 1 or 2 sentences long, and the entire book reads very stacato. The conversations are stiff and unnatural feeling. Everything is very repetitive, both in word choice and in thought. The same thing is repeated 3 or 4 times over a single page, multiple times over. I ended up doing so much skimming. The first 50% of the book is all slow burn, and the last 50% is almost straight mediocre spice. This wouldn't have been all bad if the grammar and spelling errors didn't start at the exact same time. Tongue is repeatedly misspelled in the middle of the spice.
