Так в одному вірші пише Альфред Дуґлас, пристрасна дружба з яким і стала згубою Вайлда та призвела до ув’язнення. У вікторіанському суспільстві ця фраза була евфемізмом на позначення своєрідних стосунків, більших і ширших за дружбу. Саме про таку нестримну пристрасть і звіряється Оскар Вайлд у 'De Profundis', означуючи, ким для нього був Альфред Дуґлас, чим стала ця згубна любов і що митець ладен офірувати заради вираження себе в творінні.
