Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo! is the debut album by American new wave band Devo, released in August 1978 by Warner Bros. in North America and Virgin Records in Europe. Produced by Brian Eno and recorded at Conny Plank’s studio in Cologne, the album transformed Devo’s Akron-born art concept of “de-evolution” into a tightly wound blend of punk energy, robotic precision, and absurdist humor.
The material had been written and refined over several years, with early singles like Mongoloid and Jocko Homo already establishing the band’s jerky, mechanical sound and satirical stance. Eno’s experimental production added textural depth, though the group largely preserved their own angular minimalism. The resulting album balanced rigid rhythm, synth-driven melodies, and detached vocals—an aesthetic that would influence the emerging new wave and post-punk movements.
Upon release, the album reached No. 12 on the UK Albums Chart and No. 78 in the United States. Though critics were divided at the time, it was later praised for its innovation and cultural impact. Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, and Spin have since listed it among the most important debut albums of its era, recognizing it as a defining moment in the evolution of late-1970s art rock and electronic pop.
