From the publishers of a popular series of building books comes Small Homes, which is highly relevant for these times -- getting smaller, rather than larger. Some 75 builders share their knowledge of building and design, with artistic, practical, and/or economical homes in the United States, Canada, England, Scotland, France, Germany, Spain, New Zealand, and Lithuania.

  • The average American home is 2,500 sq. ft.
  • The tiny home averages 200-300 sq. ft.
  • The small homes here are 400-1200 sq. ft. -- the middle ground -- not too big, not too small ( la Goldilocks).

Compared to the average American home, small homes are less expensive, use less resources, are more efficient to heat and cool, and cheaper to maintain and repair. Compared to tiny homes, they offer a lot more space and breathing room.

They are desirable for people who want to avoid a bank mortgage or high rents, yet need more room than a tiny house affords.

Here are 65 small homes.

They vary from unique and artistic to simple and low-cost. Some are plain, ordinary buildings that provide owners shelter at a reasonable cost -- and some are inspiring examples of design, carpentry, craftsmanship, imagination, creativity, and homemaking.

Some are built with "natural materials," such as cob or straw, some with recycled wood or lumber milled on-site, some are old homes that have been remodeled, and many are designed and built from scratch by the owners. Many are in the country, some in small towns, and some in large cities.

It's all in the hands.

The underlying theme with Shelter's books, which cover an over-40-year span, is that you can create your own home with your own hands, using mostly natural materials.

And note: A computer can't build your home for you. You still need a hammer (or nail gun), a saw -- and human hands.

My Golden Loves
Size: 2-pack, Style: Duo
My 8 month old Golden Retriever loves these. It is also one of the few products she cannot destroy. They smell as described and she loves to chew them and play fetch when. She can chew these easily without destroying them. Overall good value for the money for my Golden

They don't smell like peanut butter or bacon. But our dogs still love them.

If they squeaked, they would be the perfect ball!
Size: 2-pack, Style: Duo
I bought our 15 month old Coton several Chuck-It toys on an Amazon deal. He is incredibly playful, mischievous, and ball/toy obsessed, especially for anything that makes noise. He can also be very destructive so I love how durable most of their products are - they’re among our longest lasting toys and worth every penny. We have yet to take them to the dog park, but they’re a perfect size for sharing in plat time. And they are keeping him busy at home - that’s a good thing. The scent is subtle but strong enough for him I guess because he loves gnawing on them. If they had squeakers, they would be absolutely perfect. Hopefully Chuck-It will see an opportunity for that down the road!

Most durable fetch balls I know of.
Size: 2-pack, Style: Duo
These balls are the biggest balls of them all. Well, not the biggest, but the best. Every other ball she would chew up in short order and I'd be throwing her a floppy piece of rubber. She just wants to fetch, but if it's not bouncing, she can't catch it on the bounce. Got these balls in July and no damage to them. I just ordered another pair, but only because the other two somehow got stuck up in trees. We have some very old and very large oak trees so not so easy to retrieve. Hope they somehow drop someday. But in the meantime, Lassie will be happy with her new ones. Very highly recommended!
