Dans Darwin’s journey, vous incarnerez des scientifiques passionnés, suivant les traces de Darwin, et vous devrez explorer les îles Galapagos pour gagner de l’argent, découvrir des espèces (très important), établir des campements, collecter des fossiles et envoyer toutes vos découvertes au musée. Le jeu propose un mécanisme de placement d'ouvriers original, où vos ouvriers évolueront au fur et à mesure de leur expérience et acquerront de nouvelles compétences et capacités.

À tour de rôle, les joueurs posent un ouvrier sur le plateau pour réaliser une des très nombreuses actions du plateau : naviguer, explorer les îles, se former, collecter des spécimens puis les donner au musée ou bien alors correspondre avec l’Europe... Les ouvriers ont tous une spécialité, au fur à mesure de la partie les joueurs peuvent les faire évoluer pour les rendre plus efficaces. Les actions et objectifs réalisés offrent des points de victoire.
