A fascinating, powerfully evocative story of four generations of Cuban women, through whose lives the author illuminates a vivid picture--both personal and historical--of Cuba in our century. "When I want to read a culture," writes Wendy Gimbel in her prologue, "I listen to stories about families, sensing in their contours the substance of larger mysteries." And certainly in the Revuelta family she has found a source of both mystery and revelation. At its center is Naty: born in 1925, educated in the United States, a socialite during the Batista era, who after marriage to a prominent doctor and the birth of a daughter became intoxicated with Castro and his revolution (here, published for the first time, are the letters they exchanged while he was in jail). Though her husband and daughter immigrated to the United States after Castro's victory, Naty remained in Cuba to raise her second child, Castro's unacknowledged daughter, only to be ultimately confronted by his dismissive, withering judgment: "Naty missed the train." Her two daughters, one of whom settles well into life in America, while the other never recovers from her father's intransigent repudiation of her; her granddaughter, who Naty desperately believes will return to Cuba when--not if--Castro is removed from the island; and her mother, an unregenerate reactionary: these are the lives that complete this extraordinary story. Each of the women is irrevocably marked with a part of the island's terrible and poignant tale, and Wendy Gimbel has created a rich and intense narrative of their lives and times. Havana Dreams leaves us with an indelible impression of familial obligation and illicit love; of the heady but doomed romanticism of revolution; and of the profound consequences of Cuba's contemporary history for the ordinary and most intimate lives of its people.Binding Type: Paperback

Worth a lot more than I paid!
I waited a year before making this review. I could not be more impressed with how well this machine has been performing, regardless of its low price. I have been making two or three americacano's a day for a year. Every cup is just like the last. It takes about 90 seconds to have a hot eight ounce americacano! The only time it leaks is if I grind the beans too fine. Once I dial in my grinder, Im set until I switch to different bean. I feel like I have already got my moneys worth. If it died tomorrow, I would order another one.

The coffee is very tasty
This 20-bar espresso machine is compact, stylish, and very easy to use. It makes great-tasting coffee with a nice crema, and the steam wand works perfectly for cappuccinos and lattes. The water tank is spacious and convenient, and the display showing brew time and water temperature gives it a modern touch. Perfect for enjoying great coffee at home without taking up much space… I’m in love with my coffee maker 😍

Wonderful so far! UPDATED REVIEW: little over a month later...
Reducing to 1* due to machine being defective. No longer exerting enough pressure for good shots and the portafilter has started leaking. I've done all troubleshooting and steps that should be taken for these issues to no success. Machine is basically a hot water machine now.
4.5*
The warmer on top could certainly be better but other than that I haven't had any issues. Seems to be as advertised. It's definitely quieter than my nespresso machine and makes a better shot for sure. Getting the grind and tamping right takes a bit of trial and error if you're new to making espresso but once you get that down, this machine will do what you need. The Americano option is also a little wonky imo but I haven't messed with it very much. I just run my shots and use the hot water function when I make an americano 🤷🏻♀️ as long as it lasts it seems like it's gonna be a great purchase 😌

Excellent espresso at home, easy and quick to use
Excellent espresso coffee maker. Prepare a coffee with a very good aroma, perfect cream and intense flavor, like from a coffee shop. It is easy to use, heats up quickly and its design is modern and compact. Very good value for money. Totally recommended!

Fine espresso but poor frother
I wanted to like this, but couldn’t.
The good:
Makes fine espresso. Uses a typical pressurized portofilter, so there’s no skill to it. It can use normal drip coffee grinds.
Looks nice.
Has timed (albeit short) presets for single and double shots.
But…
The display is useless. 198 degrees is the temperature shown…but it never changes. No other status is shown. Might as well say “On”
The worst part…the FROTHER.
It’s not removable. It’s very hard to clean.
It’s got a small orifice that doesn’t froth very well. It just makes A LOT of noise. Not good at 5am. The ones with the removable barrel are quieter and foam better.
The foam selector is poorly designed. To go from coffee to steam you have to go past “hot water” which you don’t need in your milk. And then you have to stand by for several seconds while it heats up and pressurizes. Other machines have a much simpler switch design that preheats ahead of time and then steams on command.
It’s pretty, but other machines work much better
