What is Fucidin H?
Fucidin H cream is a combination of an antibiotic and a steroid. It has two active ingredients: fusidic acid, which is an antibiotic, and hydrocortisone acetate, a steroid. These ingredients work together to treat dyshidrotic eczema and infected eczema.
People with eczema often have dry skin because it struggles to retain moisture. This makes the skin more susceptible to things that can cause itching and inflammation. If you scratch it, the skin may crack, which can lead to infections. These changes to your skin's barrier can raise the chances of getting infected eczema.
Dyshidrotic eczema is a form of eczema that affects the hands and feet. Initially, it feels extremely itchy and may have a burning sensation, but there's no visible sign at first. As it progresses, small blisters filled with clear fluid appear in clusters. These can grow into larger blisters, which might become infected. If an infection occurs, the skin becomes inflamed, irritated, and painful. The blisters can burst and leak, leading to further infection. This can make the skin very dry and cracked. In severe instances, the skin may even start to bleed.
How does Fucidin H work?
Fucidin H has two active ingredients: fusidic acid and hydrocortisone acetate. They each work in different ways to help relieve your symptoms.
What doses of Fucidin H are there?
Fucidin H is available in a single strength and comes in either a 30g or 60g tube. The amount you use will depend on how large the affected area is. You should apply the cream twice daily for two weeks.
When will my skin improve?
If you use it regularly, you should notice some improvement in your skin within a few days. If there's no change after a week, please get in touch with our clinician for guidance. You should stop using Fucidin H after two weeks, as it might lead to side effects.
What should I do if I accidentally apply Fucidin H incorrectly?
If you forget to apply Fucidin, just do so as soon as you remember. Then carry on with your treatment as usual.
If you're using Fucidin H on your face and it accidentally gets in your eyes, rinse your eyes well with cold water.
What are the side effects of Fucidin H?
Like all medicines, Fucidin H may cause side effects for some individuals. A common side effect is a reaction where the cream is applied. You might experience a burning or tingling feeling, or your skin could become very itchy and irritated. This is more likely to happen in babies and young children, or if the treated area is covered with a dressing.
What is the difference between Fucidin H and Fucidin?
Fucidin H and Fucidin are not the same. Fucidin H has two active ingredients: a steroid and an antibiotic. It's usually prescribed for conditions like eczema and dermatitis. The steroid helps reduce inflammation, while the antibiotic tackles infections. On the other hand, Fucidin only contains an antibiotic called fusidic acid. It's used to treat bacterial infections like impetigo, infected dermatitis, and infected cuts.
Is Fucidin H suitable during pregnancy and breastfeeding?
If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, please consult our clinician before using Fucidin H.
Is Fucidin H available prescription-free?
No, Fucidin H can't be bought over the counter; you'll need a prescription for it. This ensures it's safe for you, considering your medical history.
How does Fucidin H compare with other treatments for eczema?
Fucidin H is a cream applied to the skin that offers both antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects. Research has shown that, unlike some other creams, Fucidin can penetrate deeply into both healthy and damaged skin. This allows it to work against microbes even in the deeper layers, making it a good option for treating infected eczema.
If Fucidin H isn't right for you, there are other treatment options you can try.
For infected eczema, Dermovate NN is a cream that includes both an antibiotic and a steroid. If your infected eczema is more severe, oral antibiotics like Clarithromycin and Flucloxacillin may be prescribed.
For dyshidrotic eczema, you can use creams like Betnovate and Mometasone. Both are steroid creams, but they have different active ingredients. If one doesn't seem to be effective, you might want to try the other.
