Der Ort Postelberg wurde Anfang Juni 1945 zum Schauplatz von Verbrechen gegen die Menschlichkeit an der lokalen deutschsprachigen Bevölkerung. Offiziell wurden fast 800 Menschen ermordet, während auf deutscher Seite mehr als 1.500 als vermisst gelten.

Niemand weiß, wie viele Einwohner des Saazerlandes nach dem Krieg tatsächlich getötet wurden. Abgesehen von einer Exhumierung nach dem Krieg, die von einer parlamentarischen Kommission angeordnet wurde, sind keine umfassenden Untersuchungen durchgeführt worden. Die Mörder selbst gaben bei der Untersuchung im Jahr 1947 an, dass die Zahl der Opfer „etwa tausend“ betrug. Es handelt sich jedoch mit Sicherheit um die größte ethnische Säuberung an einem Ort in Europa seit Ende des 2. Weltkriegs bis zum Massaker in Srebenica in Bosnien Mitte der 1990er Jahre. Der Vergleich mit Srebenica ist mehr als treffend: Vor dem Krieg lag Postelberg/Potoloprty genau an der tschechisch-deutschen Sprachgrenze, und die beiden Völkergruppen waren zahlenmäßig fast gleich stark vertreten.

In diesem Buch werden Geheimakten aus tschechischen Archiven ausgewertet, welche die Ereignisse aus Sicht der Täter dokumentieren. Überlebende Opfer der Inhaftierung und Vertreibung erzählen nach vielen Jahren erstmals ihre Geschichte der tschechischen Öffentlichkeit. Tschechische Journalisten, Schriftsteller und Theaterleute machen die Nachkriegsverbrechen in Nordböhmen ihren Landsleuten durch Zeitungsartikel, Ausstellungen und Theateraufführungen bekannt. Auch in Deutschland berichten Medien jetzt über „Postelberg“.

So, as other reviewers make clear, this is very similar to Pack Darling and The Beta. It’s much closer aligned with The Beta, in plot and maybe more like Pack Darling with characters. That being said, I don’t hate this…..but it wasn’t great either. It’s both books mentioned but just….less. Less angst, less emotion, less feeling. The plot feels very half fleshed out, and the “bad guy” feels underwhelming. I didn’t really feel any real emotions from and of the male leads, except maybe Oliver. The others fell sorta flat for me. And Mika makes herself out to be this big bad ass straight outta training and then we never see it from here again with the one fitting room incident as the exception. SPOILER: The whole, “Oh, I’m actually probably an Omega, but I don’t wanna be but I do actually wanna be but no one can ever know my secret that I do nothing to hide “ thing fell so flat. She never commutes to believing she was secretly an omega, but also mentions her “secret” a lot. It just felt so manufactured. I’m intrigued enough to read part 2 and see how the author closes everything out, but this is not one I’ll recommend or ever come back to.
